The Three Things I Never Fly Without | Airplane Skincare Tips

Let's start with the airplane...

One of the questions I get asked most is,

"What do you pack for your skin when you travel?"

Honestly?

Not much.

Over the years, I've learned that healthy skin isn't about packing your entire bathroom in a carry-on. It's about understanding what your skin is about to experience and giving it a little extra support before it starts asking for help.

Most people think their skin changes because they've arrived somewhere new.

And while your destination definitely has a story to tell (we'll get to that in another article), one of the biggest stressors for your skin actually happens before you ever land.

The airplane.

Commercial airplanes are incredible for getting us where we want to go.

They're just not very friendly to our skin.

The air inside an airplane cabin is incredibly dry. During just a few hours in the air, your skin loses moisture more quickly, your lips can begin to feel tight, and your skin barrier starts working overtime to hold onto hydration.

If you've ever stepped off a flight wondering why your skin suddenly feels...

  • Dry
  • Tight
  • Dull
  • More sensitive
  • Or just... "off"

You're definitely not imagining it.

Flying also changes your routine.

Maybe you're drinking less water.

Sleeping differently.

Eating airport food.

Wearing makeup longer than usual.

Or rushing through your skincare because everything has to fit inside a carry-on.

None of those changes seem significant on their own.

Together?

Your skin notices.

The good news is you don't need a complicated travel routine.

You just need to give your skin a little extra support before it starts asking for help.

The Three Things I Never Fly Without

1. HydraCalm Mask

This one always surprises people.

Yes... I actually apply a very thin layer before boarding and again during longer flights.

Think of it more like a moisturizer than a traditional face mask—your seatmate won't even notice.

It helps support my skin barrier throughout the flight, so I arrive hydrated instead of trying to play catch-up after I land.

Pro Tip: Apply a thin layer about 15–20 minutes before boarding. Giving your skin a little extra support before takeoff is much easier than trying to replenish moisture after hours in dry cabin air.

2. Calming Mist

When my skin starts feeling tight and dry, I give it a few spritzes.

This calming mist has become one of my travel staples. It's one of those little things that just feels so good when your skin has been sitting in dry airplane air or you've been out exploring all day.

I always pour some into a TSA-approved travel spray bottle and keep it in my purse.

On a trip to Mexico City, the air was so dry that people were actually experiencing nosebleeds. I remember thinking,

"Thank goodness I packed this."

I found myself reaching for it throughout the day, and my skin was so happy to have that little extra boost of hydration.

Pro Tip: Transfer a small amount into a TSA-approved travel spray bottle before your trip so it's always within reach—both on the plane and while you're exploring.

3. Lip Repair & Renewal

If there's one place I notice airplane air first...

It's my lips.

This never leaves my purse.

I'll apply it before takeoff and reapply throughout the flight whenever my lips start feeling dry.

On a flight to France, my lips became so dry they actually cracked and started bleeding. I applied Lip Repair & Renewal, settled in for a nap, and woke up thinking,

"WOW."

My lips felt completely different.

Since then, it hasn't missed a single trip with me.

Pro Tip: Apply a generous layer before takeoff and reapply throughout your flight. Preventing dry, cracked lips is much easier than trying to repair them once they've become uncomfortable.

Healthy skin starts before you land.

One of the biggest reasons I created Skin Care Beyond Borders is because I've learned that healthy skin isn't just about the products you use.

It's about understanding what your skin is responding to.

The airplane.

The climate.

The water.

The stress.

The routine changes.

The adventure.

When you begin asking,

"What's changed?"

instead of immediately asking,

"What product do I need?"

your skin often starts making a whole lot more sense.

And that's exactly what we'll keep exploring together.

Where are you headed next?

Whether you're catching a flight, planning a vacation, or simply wondering why your skin suddenly feels different, remember this:

Your destination isn't always where your skin's journey begins.

Sometimes...

It starts the moment you buckle your seatbelt.
